The History of Pandemics

Epidemics are not a new phenomenon, they have existed for thousands of years. The novelty is that, throughout history, the phenomenon has become more frequent, mainly due to globalization.

Therefore, we must learn to deal with epidemics and pandemics in an increasingly safe and effective way, investing and trusting in science, adopting cautious and prevention behaviors and building a solidary world in which no one can be left behind.

The first recorded pandemic dates back to 3.000 years BC. Since then, the enemy invisible to the naked eye has been reaching faster and faster to more and more areas of the planet, turning epidemics into pandemics. Some of them, due to their intensity, have gone down in history.

Guided by Professor Teresa Rodrigues (Nova University of Lisbon), we propose a journey through these historical moments in the video The History of Pandemics.

Gulbenkian Ideas – «Covid-19: what next?»

The special Gulbenkian Ideas series “Covid-19: what next?” features a collection of short videos, interspersed with testimonials by renowned Portuguese and international thinkers and youth aged 15 to 30 involved in projects at the Foundation, on what will change in the world – for better or for worse – in this pandemic crisis.

The topics they have chosen include everything from work, social relations, justice, family, daily life, politics, religion, the environment and architecture, among others.
