On the field of Science- one of the four statutory aims of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation -, the Science Department disseminates its grantmaking activities (in Portugal)  on the stimulation of creativity and scientific research, the promotion of links between science and culture and the strengthen of interaction between science and society.

On the other hand, the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) represents the operative side of the Foundation's activity in science: currently focused on biomedical sciences, the IGC actively contributes to the renewal of scientific research in Portugal through the running of a competitive PhD Program and operating as a "host institution", where young scientists are provided with cutting-edge technology for conducting their own research projects in full autonomy for periods up to 5 years.

Research grants, colloquia, debates, exhibitions, science awareness events and programs, awards and other support to furthering the cause of science together represent key Foundation targets within this field.
