Rui Esgaio
President's Office / Secretary of the Board
Director of the President’s Office since May 2001, Rui Esgaio joined the Gulbenkian Foundation in 1999, as assessor to the same office. Since February 2005, he has held these functions in conjunction with the post of Secretary of the Board of Trustees. Graduating in Economics from the Catholic University of Portugal and with a post-graduate qualification in Development and International Cooperation from the Higher Institute of Economics and Management, he began his professional career under the auspices of the project "Building the Competitive Advantages of Portugal", run by Professor Michael Porter, having also held the post of Assistant to the Secretary of State for Agro-food Production before later serving as Secretary of State for Agricultural Markets and Agro-food Quality.
João Coelho
Accounts
Director of Accountancy since August 2002, where he had served as Assistant Director since September 1996, João Coelho graduated in Economics from the Higher Institute of Economics, Technical University of Lisbon.
He began his career at the Gulbenkian Foundation in May 1970 at the then Centre of Agrarian Economic Studies (later integrated into the Gulbenkian Institute of Science), as a Research Technician. Following the closure of this research unit in 1986, he was appointed head of the Institute’s accountancy department, which he ran for around nine years. Throughout this period, he held responsibility for the Institute’s budgetary management as well as the accountancy and financial control of sums awarded by European bodies for the different research projects undertaken. He carried out studies and proceeded with the computerisation of the entire accountancy and budget management process at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science.

Elisabete Caramelo
Communication
Elisabete Caramelo was born in Lisbon on 28th May 1963. After graduating in Media Studies from Lisbon’s Nova University, she became a journalist for the following eleven years.
Her professional career began at Agência Noticiosa Portuguesa, with articles published in various newspapers and magazines as well as television appearances. It was to be radio that defined this stage of her career. Following a six-month professional training program in "Radio Journalism", Elisabete Caramelo was a founding member of the TSF radio station where she progressed to become Senior Editor before leaving to join the Presidency of the Republican in 1996. She spent the following decade as media consultant to President of the Republic, Dr. Jorge Sampaio.
Alasdair Mackintosh
Finance and Investment
Director of Finance and Investment Services and Secretary General of Subsidiary Companies since 1996, Alasdair James Mackintosh began his career at the Foundation in 1989 as Assistant Director of the same service.
Graduating in law from the University of Cambridge (UK), he is a member of the "Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland".
He was first representative and then senior partner at the auditing firm Thomson McLintock & Co., the predecessor to KPMG in Portugal since 1968.
João Castel-Branco Pereira
Calouste Gulbenkian Museum
Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum since 1988, João Castel-Branco Pereira was born in Faro in November 1947.
Graduating in History from the Classical University of Lisbon, he then specialised in Museum Curation.
Prior to taking over as head of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, he served as Curator of the National Coach Museum and Director of the National Tile Museum.
He was responsible for the permanent Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa coach exhibition and the 15th to 18th century tile display at the National Tile Museum. He also coordinated the refurbishment of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum between 2000 and 2001.

Cristina Pires
Budget and Planning Control
Director of the Budget and Planning Control Services since 2000, Cristina Pires began her career at the Foundation in 1996 as Assistant Director of the same entity.
Graduating in Economics from the Higher Institute of Economics, Technical University of Lisbon, she began her professional career at the Ministry for Internal Affairs in 1978, in the General Directorate for Regional and Local Action.
At the Foundation, she has been responsible for implementing the working processes re-engineering project that extended across accounting, heritage, treasury, sales, procurement, storage, human resources, budgetary control and management indicators.
João Pedro Garcia
Centre Culturel Calouste Gulbenkian / International Department
Director of the International Department since 1992, João Pedro Garcia graduated in law from the Faculty of Law, University of Lisbon.
He served as a diplomat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1984 and 1992 and was nominated Ambassador of Portugal to Paris between 1987 and 1992.
He has contributed towards many Portuguese and international journals and magazines in the area of classical music and is founding member no. 1 of the "Friends of the S. Carlos" opera support group. He was secretary general of the Portuguese Youth Musical Association.
He has been made a Knight in the Order of Infante D. Henrique and an Officer in the Order of Merit.

João Caraça obtained the D. Phil. in Nuclear Physics at the University of Oxford (1973) and the Agregação in Physics at the Lisbon Faculty of Sciences (1974).
He is Director of the Science Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon. João Caraça is also Full Professor of Science and Technology Policy at the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa. He was coordinator of the M.Sc. Course in the Economics and Management of Science and Technology from 1990 to 2003.
He is member of the Governing Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology – EIT. He also integrates the Steering Group of the European Forum on Philanthropy and Research Funding and is President of the Advisory Board of the Portuguese Business Association for Innovation – COTEC.

He also co-authored Limits to Competition (1995), co-edited O Futuro Tecnológico (1999) and collaborated in Le Printemps du Politique (2007).

António Coutinho
Gulbenkian Science Institute
Director of the Gulbenkian Science Institute since 1998, António Coutinho graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon in 1970 and completed his Doctoral Degree in Medical Microbiology at the Karolinska Institute of Stockholm in 1974. He also remains First Class Research Director at the CNRS (France).
His research and scientific studies have taken place at various institutes and universities: Karolinska Institute (1974-5), Basle Institute of Immunology (1975-9), Umeå Faculty of Medicine (1979-84), University of Geneva (1982) and University of Lund (1987). From 1982 to 1998, he was director of the Immuno-biology Service, Pasteur Institute, Paris. He was appointed director of Advanced Studies at the Gulbenkian Science Institute of Oeiras and launched the Gulbenkian Doctoral Degree Program in Biology and Medicine (1993-2000).
Author of over 400 scientific articles, António Coutinho has maintained an intense pace of academic commitments, participating in conferences and involved in a number of academies, journals and international scientific councils. He has received various prestigious awards: Fernstromska Priset, Sweden (1981), FEBS Anniversary Prize (1982), Gulbenkian Science and Technology Award (1987), Prix Behring-Metchnikoff, France (1990), Prix Lacassagne du College de France (1995). He is also a Senior Officer in the Order of Infante D. Henrique (2003).
In January 2002, António Coutinho was ranked by the "Science Citation Index" as one of the 100 most influential scientists worldwide in the last two decades.

António Repolho Correia
Central Services
Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Central Services since February 2001, an economist by education, António Repolho Correia began his career at the Ministry of Finances in 1977, as a Senior Technician in the Offices of Studies and Planning, a position he retained through to 1983. Among his subsequent positions are: Divisional Head of the General Directorate of the Treasury (1985-1987), Head of Office of the Secretary of State for Planning and Regional Development (1987-1995) and Member of the INGA Audit Commission, the Fiscal Board of IPE - Águas de Portugal and the Fiscal Board of the Innovation Agency.
António Repolho Correia was Director at Teixeira Duarte - Engenharia e Construções S.A., and environmental service companies within the group: Recolte - Recolha, Tratamento e Eliminação de Resíduos S.A and Indáqua - Industria e Gestão de Águas S.A. He was also Board Member of the Association of Portuguese Environment Sector Companies.
Ana Rijo da Silva
Human Resources
Head of the Human Resources department since September 2002, Ana Maria Garrido Rijo da Silva was born in 1961 and graduated in Economics and Business Management from the Catholic University of Portugal, having undertaken post graduate study in Actuarial Sciences at the same institution. In 1992, she completed her MPhil in Business Studies at the University of Warwick. Between 1984 and 1988, she was Assistant to the Management Department at her alma mater, where she also chairs the subjects within the fields of behavioural studies and human resources. In 1991, she was a guest lecturer at the Warwick Business School.
Throughout the 1990s, Maria Garrido Rijo da Silva was responsible for coordinating and managing various degree subjects and scientific fields at institutions connected to the Catholic University of Portugal, including the Faculty of Economics and Business Sciences, the University Institute of Social Development and the Faculty of Human Sciences. She also held various consultancy roles and was member of the Commission for the Reorganisation of Tax Service (1997-1998) and the Commission for Drafting the Organic Law for the Ministry of Justice (1999). As a member of the "European Summer School for Advanced Management" (1992-1995) Consortium, she organised the organisation’s 5th program that took place in June 1993.
She has coordinated the post graduate studies in Human Resource Management at the Faculty of Economics and Business Sciences since 1995.
She has been Director of the Recursos Humanos journal since 1999.

Born in Alcobaça in 1953, graduating in Philosophy from the Faculty of Letters, the University of Lisbon, José Afonso Furtado has been director of the Calouste de Gulbenkian Foundation Art Library since 1992.
Lecturing on the post graduate course in publishing at the Faculty of Human Sciences, Catholic University of Portugal and guest conference speaker on the post graduate course in intellectual property of the Faculty of Law at the same university, José Afonso Furtado is a member of the National Reading Plan Commission of Honour.
In addition to various articles and columns, he has published «O que é o Livro» (Difusão Cultural, Lisboa, 1995) and «Os Livros e as Leituras - Novas Ecologias da Informação» (Livros e Leituras, Lisboa, 2000) and «O papel e o pixel. Do impresso ao digital: continuidades e transformações», (Escritório do Livro, Florianópolis, 2006).

Astrig Tchamkerten
Armenian Communities
Born in Brussels, Astrig Tchamkerten graduated in Political Science from the University of Neuchâtel, in Switzerland.
She was head of communications at the Swiss arm of Caritas in Lucerne. The author of various articles on the situation of refugees and the inclusion of immigrants, the physically and mentally challenged and drug addicts in Switzerland and contributing towards the adoption of alternatives to prison sentences for young offenders in the country.
In 1989-90, she attended the State University of Yerevan to deepen her Armenian language skills and work on the rehabilitation of children left traumatized by the earthquake of 1988. On her return to Switzerland, she headed the Armenian Cultural Centre in Geneva and published the book "Armenia, my roots", since translated into Arabic, Armenian and brail.
Between 1994 and 2011, she served as Assistant Director of the Armenian Community Service.
She has been honoured with the Medal of Saint James, by the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem, with the Medal of the Holy Sepulchre, by the Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah (Jerusalem), with the Medal of St. Mesrob, by the Armenian Catholic Patriarch Jean-Pierre Kasparian (Beirut), with the Medal of St. Mesrob, by His Holiness Aram 1, Catholics of the Great House of Cilicia (Beirut). She has also been awarded the Medal of Saint Salvador by the similarly named Armenian Hospital in Istanbul.
Andrew Barnett
UK Branch
Andrew Barnett has been Director of the UK Branch of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation since September 2007. He is also a board member of Yorkshire Metropolitan Housing and a Trustee of Addaction, the UK’s largest drug and alcohol misuse charity.
Barnett joined the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation where he held the post of Director of Policy Development and Communications. Prior to this, he was Director of Communications at the UK Sports Council and Head of Public Affairs at the National Consumer Council. He previously held posts at HSBC Holdings, the Arts Council of England, and the Foyer Federation for Youth, as well as working for the Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Homelessness and Housing Need. He has served, in a voluntary capacity, as Chair of the Trustees of SPACE Studios, a London-based arts property charity, and as a Director and Trustee of St Christopher's Fellowship, a housing association providing care and support to disadvantaged young people.
Born in New South Wales, Australia, Barnett was educated at King’s School, Bruton in Somerset, and St Andrews University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an enthusiast for contemporary abstract and Aboriginal art.
Isabel Carlos
Modern Art Centre
Director of the Centre of Modern Art since April 2009.
With a Degree in Philosophy and a Master’s Degree in Media Studies, Isabel Carlos has been an art critic since 1991. Prominent among the roles she has held are serving as Adviser on Exhibitions for Lisbon 94 – European Capital of Culture, co-founder and Sub-director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Ministry of Culture (1996-2001). Within this latter capacity, among other duties inherent to the post, she organised the Portuguese exhibitions at the Venice Biennial in 2001 and the São Paulo Biennials in 1996 and 1998. Isabel Carlos has also served as member of the Venice Biennial Jury (2003), Artistic Director of the Sydney Biennial (2004), curator of the Pavilion of Portugal at the Venice Biennial (2005) and curator of the 9th Sharjah Biennial, United Arab Emirates (2009).

Risto Nieminen has been director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Music Service since April 2009.
Nieminen holds a Master’s Degree in Musicology and Literature, University of Helsinki and, among other roles, was director of the Finland Radio Symphony Orchestra between 1989 and 1991, and artistic director of IRCAM (Institut de Recherce et Coordination Acoustique/Musique), Georges Pompidou Centre, in Paris, between 1991 and 1996.
He sat on the Board of the European Association of Festivals from 1997 to 2001 and in 1998 was awarded the honour of Knight of the Arts and Letters of France.
